Goodby Deadhorse - Headed South
I blasted out of Headhorse around 9AM. I saw no other motorcycles leaving. It was raining... I don't mean drizzle, I'm talking RAIN. The road out of Deadhorse was nothing but potholes and MUD... I could only maintain about 15 mph on the slick surface. Several times I almost went down. Graders were out and about on the Dalton attempting to smooth the surface - but in some spots it was pretty bad. Mike caught and passed me about 20 miles S of Deadhorse - I would not see him again till reaching Coldfoot. The rain lasted for about 120 miles then dissipated. Back to 50-60 mph on hard pack dirt/gravel. Had to stop about 40 miles out of Coldfoot to pull out my auxilliary fuel tank and dump it into my tank to make Coldfoot. No snow in the pass so I made pretty good time and hit Coldfoot around 4PM. Mike was still there - apparently he had engine cooling problems on the pass that slowed him considerbly. We also met another guy there on a DR650 who was headed South.... We all left together - then they left me in the dust... Made it back to Fairbanks around Midnight.
Over & Out....
